It is the first time that I had completed a project from the designing phase to implementing.   There were many unexpected challenges and problems during this project, however, I felt satisfied when I could make my imagination comes to reality! Receiving the positive feedback from the students makes me feel that our project had really provided some solid contribution. Therefore, this satisfaction has aroused my interest on organizing meaningful events or workshops to help others in the future.

2020 was a challenging year and our plan was greatly impacted by the social event and the outbreak of COV-19. We had to react to changes quickly, keep revising the plan and finally everything was forced to be conducted online. At first I was worried about the effectiveness of the online programme, but luckily mentees reported that they still hoped to gain something even under such tough circumstances. Same as most teammates, I’m a newbie in organizing activities. What I’ve learned is that when putting a plan into action, you really need a lot of soft skills and practical skills, which cannot be learned during lectures. All in all, I think this was a nice attempt and was pleased with the growth in the students.

"I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination." The quote from Jimmy Dean actually sums up our experiences toward this Mentorship event. While the outbreak of COV-19 during the time of our event is not what we have expected. We managed to brainstorm new back-up plans and adjusted our sails in such a short period of time. This experience had definitely sharpened our skills in terms of problem-solving and communication.

Moreover, this Mentorship programme also provided me insights into my own career pursuit. Not only do secondary students worried about what to study in university, university students are also confused about what to do when we graduate. This activity let us consider this question through different perspectives and I had gained a lot from that which accelerated my personal growth.

After the action project, I learnt how to be more adaptive towards every immediate situation. We did not expect the outbreak of coronavirus and when it came, everything was being changed in a moment and the plans needed to be changed. It reminded me of the truth that sometimes you could not rely on the fixed principles to live your life or working, all the things were changing moment to moment and we could choose to react to the storms or stay calm in the eye of typhoon.

I learned more about how to deal with undesirable situations when collaborating with others that in a project, the most important thing is to get things done and to keep the project running. I also learned to think from the perspective of the subject I want to serve. For example, some secondary school students can be shy and not willing to talk. The same goes for any other group of people. I need to keep in mind “what my job is” and “what the goal I want to achieve is” for all of my actions.

"Psychology in Action" is a course made for students like me, who wish to explore the field beyond laboratory work and literary writing. In projects like this we see the impacts on users directly, thus we must actively communicate and make changes whenever there are unexpected situations, in order to match our users' needs. The Coronavirus posed a great challenge and tested our team's spontaneity and responsiveness, which stimulated our creativity to come up with a contingency plan which could best make up for our original contents under the circumstances. Though the members were all new to communicating through online learning platforms, we were open to learning and we tried to make it work.  I believe this experience is beneficial to any future group work opportunities as it taught me to face challenges with proactivity, and an open mind.

This mentorship programme is aimed to create social value by applying psychology theories. It is a precious experience since most of the time we are focusing on learning psychology theories but not applying it to our daily life. During this programme, our team have faced many difficulties, namely the outbreak of COVID-19. We need to make contingency plans in a short period of time. I believe this is the most valuable of part of our projects. We are creating social value, but we are also learning how to apply psychology given the situation. We are giving, but we are also taking from our participants and stakeholders.
